So just what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that celebrates an against-the-odds and victorious battle the Mexican army won over the French, who invaded the east coast of Mexico near Veracruz in 1861 and pushed toward Mexico City, the capitol. The battle took place on May 5, 1862 near the town of Puebla. And with Cinco de Mayo around the corner – and do we really have to tell you that it’s May 5th??? – you might be wondering what’s going on in town. So with that in mind, we’ve put together your guide to celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Marina Del Rey!
First up, if you’ve got a furry friend or two who wants to celebrate with you, head over to the Cinco de Mayo Yappy Hour at the Healthy Spot located at 4718 Lincoln Blvd. Held on Thursday, May 4 from 6pm-8pm, you can enjoy margaritas, chips, and churros plus a pet food demo by Stella & Chewy’s. The first 25 pups will also receive a fiesta treat bag from Stella & Chewy’s. You can also participate in their “follow us” contest for a chance to win a pet spa certificate that will be raffled off during our fiesta celebration!
Or you can get tickets to the Baja Cantina Cinco celebration on the 5th itself. Located at 311 Washington Blvd, the Cantina kicks off the party at Noon with cold beer and tequilas served all day and live music beginning at 6pm. It all comes crashing to a close at 1am at which point you might be ready to collapse.
There’s also a fun Cinco de Mayo Mixer taking place at Don Chente Bar/Grill & Lounge. Located at 1248 S. Figueroa St., on the rooftop, you can eat al-pastor-and-pineapple pizza with mole buffalo wings while taking in the skyline overhead, the gathering Staples crowds below and maybe the game on the four screens. You can also drink La Mexcalitas (mescal with raspberries and chocolate bitters), añejo-laced mules, or tall beers in 100-ounce glasses. If you get there after 9pm, there’s a $5 cover.
Wherever you spend Cinco de Mayo this year, make sure you drink responsibly. And have a great 5th!!!
